MovieDibs — Privacy Policy

MovieDibs ("MovieDibs," "we," "us," or "our") is a group movie-picking app — watchlists, streaming availability, and shared decision modes (voting, tournaments, pick-for-me). MovieDibs is operated by Jason Jex, an individual sole proprietor ("the operator").

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the MovieDibs mobile app and website (together, the "Service"), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. By using the Service, you agree to this policy.

MovieDibs is intended for users in the United States.

1. Information we collect

a. Information you provide when you sign in

MovieDibs offers two ways to create an account: Google Sign-In and a passwordless email sign-in link ("magic link").

If you sign in with Google, Google shares a limited profile with us and we store:

• Your Google account identifier (a stable ID that identifies your account)
• Email address
• Display name (as set on your Google account)
• Profile picture URL (as set on your Google account)

If you sign in with an email link, we store only your email address. To send the link we create a short-lived, single-use sign-in token that expires after 15 minutes; it is stored in hashed form and deleted once used or expired.

MovieDibs never asks for or stores a password, and we do not receive or store your Google password. If you use both methods with the same email address, they resolve to one account.

b. Information you create in the app

As you use MovieDibs, we store the content and preferences you create:

• Username you choose (a public handle, if you set one)
• Watchlists and saved titles, including watched/unwatched status and per-episode watched progress
• Preferred genres and streaming services you tell us you subscribe to (used to tailor recommendations and availability — we do not access your actual streaming accounts)
• Social activity: friend connections, recommendations you send or receive, and lists you share with friends
• Group decision activity: sessions you create or join, and your nominations, votes, and vetoes within them

c. Information collected automatically

• Push notification token — if you enable notifications, we store a device token so we can send you alerts (e.g., a title leaving a service, or a group-decision update).
• Diagnostic and crash data — if the app crashes or errors, we collect technical diagnostics (e.g., error details, app version, device/OS type) through our error-monitoring provider to keep the app stable. This is not used to identify you personally.
• Advertising identifier — the MovieDibs mobile app displays ads through Google AdMob (see §4). AdMob may access your device's advertising ID and related information to serve and measure ads.

d. Information when you join a Decision as a guest

You can join and vote in a group's Decision session from an invite link without creating an account — just a display name you choose. We store that name and your nomination/veto/vote activity within that session, tied to a temporary guest identity. No email, password, or other personal information is collected for guest participation. If you later choose to save your picks (turn your guest identity into a real account), the information in §1(a) applies from that point on. If you never do, we clear the display name from unclaimed guest identities after the retention window in §5 — see that section for details.

e. Information we do not collect

• We do not collect precise location (GPS) data.
• We do not store payment card details. If you purchase a premium subscription, the transaction is handled by the app store (Google Play / Apple), which does not share your card details with us.

2. How we use your information

We use the information above to:

• Create and secure your account and keep you signed in
• Provide core features — watchlists, streaming availability, recommendations, social connections, and group decision modes
• Send notifications you've enabled (availability changes, friend/group activity)
• Maintain, debug, and improve the Service and diagnose crashes
• Display and measure ads (mobile app)
• Enforce our terms and prevent abuse

We do not sell your personal information.

3. How your information is shared

We share information only as needed to run the Service:

We do not send your personal information to our movie-catalog data provider — we only query it for public title and streaming-availability information.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights or users' safety, or in connection with a business transfer.

4. Advertising

The MovieDibs mobile app shows ads served by Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, AdMob may collect your device's advertising identifier and information about your interaction with ads. You can limit ad personalization through your device settings (e.g., "Reset advertising ID" / "Opt out of Ads Personalization" on Android). Google's handling of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

Premium users do not see ads.

5. Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see §6), we permanently delete your account and all associated data — watchlists, social connections, recommendations, session activity, and device tokens — from our active database. Sign-in session tokens automatically expire and are pruned.

Guest participation (§1d): if you join a Decision as a guest and never save your picks, we clear the display name from your guest identity about 30 days after that Decision resolves. Your votes/nominations remain as anonymous tallies so the group's result stays intact for other (registered) participants — we do not delete the underlying activity, since doing so would corrupt a shared, already-completed group decision that others can still revisit.

6. Your rights and choices

• Access / update — you can view and edit your profile, watchlists, and preferences in the app at any time.
• Delete your account — you can permanently delete your account and all associated data directly in the app (Settings → Delete Account). You can also request deletion by emailing us (see §11). Deletion is immediate and irreversible.
• Notifications — you can turn push notifications on or off from your device settings.
• Advertising — you can limit ad personalization in your device settings (see §4).

California residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request access to or deletion of it, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or "share" (as defined under California law) your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising beyond the AdMob disclosure in §4. To exercise these rights, use the in-app deletion tool or contact us (§11).

7. Security

We protect your information with industry-standard measures: all data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS), sign-in is handled by Google, and session tokens are stored only in hashed form. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information and respond to issues promptly.

8. Children's privacy

MovieDibs is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us (§11) and we will delete it.

9. International users

MovieDibs is intended for users in the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the U.S., you consent to processing your information in the United States.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide notice in the app or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
